Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani sent to five-day police custody in assault case

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was on Tuesday sent to five-day police custody by a court in Assam’s Barpeta district in a assault case filed by a woman police officer. Chief Judicial Magistrate Mukul Chetia sent Mevani to police custody after he was produced before the court in the afternoon. Mevani was charged under IPC sections 294 (speaking obscene words in public), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault on a public servant in the performance of duty) and 354 (criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman). He was arrested on Monday in another case in Kokrajhar district, soon after he was released on bail. Mevani, an independent MLA backed by the Congress, was first arrested on April 19 from Palanpur city in Gujarat, and brought to Kokrajhar for tweeting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is alleged that he along with senior police officers assaulted a woman officer going from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar.
