Gujarat Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani gets bail

Independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, who was arrested by the Assam Police last Wednesday from the western state for an alleged tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was granted bail on Monday.

A local court in Kokrajhar on Sunday sent Mevani to one-day judicial custody.

Mevani’s lawyer said, “The court has sent Jignesh Mevani to judicial custody for one day and the court will hear the bail plea on Monday. Police has sought 10 days’ custody. If the court does not grant bail, we will move the high court.” ” Angshuman Bora says ANI,

Earlier on Wednesday night, Mevani was arrested by a team of Assam Police from Palanpur town in Gujarat over his one or two tweets.

An FIR was lodged against him following a complaint by Assam BJP leader Arup Kumar Dey.

Case against Mevani under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between two communities), 295 (A), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and sections of IT was recorded. Take action.

Some of the tweets on Mevani’s Twitter handle are not visible on her feed, with a message showing that the tweets have been blocked in India based on “legal demand”.

In a controversial tweet, Mevani had reportedly requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure communal harmony during his recent visit to Gujarat.

Mevani claimed that he was arrested out of political vendetta against him.

The Assam State Congress unit had opposed the arrest of the Gujarat MLA.

Elected as an independent MLA, Mevani had extended his support to the Congress in September 2019.
