Every year, Guru Arjan Dev Martyrdom Day is celebrated on the 24th day of the Jyeshtha month of the Sikh calendar. This year, the day is celebrated to remember the fifth Guru of the Sikhs.
History and Significance
At the age of 18, Guru Arjan Dev took over the reins of the Sikh community as the fifth Guru. His father, Guru Ram Das, was the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. After taking over as the fifth guru in 1581, Guru Arjan Dev did everything for the religion to flourish. He became the founder of the major cities of Punjab such as Tarn Taran Sahib and Kartarpur.
In 1588, he laid the foundation of the Harmandir Sahib Gurdwara, known as the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The temple was built to welcome people of every caste, creed, caste and religion and provide them food and shelter. It is believed that as his popularity among the community grew, the Mughal emperor Jahangir ordered his execution. After his death, his son Guru Hargobind Singh Ji became the sixth Guru of the Sikhs.
To mark the day, the Sikh community makes donations and helps the needy. To beat the scorching heat, selflessly offer food and sweet water to everyone. They remember their fifth guru and try to follow his teachings that day.
Let’s take a look at some of Guru Arjun Dev’s golden words to celebrate the courageous guru:
- “Do not enmity with anyone because God is within everyone.”
- “The best of all religions is to chant the name of the Lord and to do pious deeds. The best of all religious rituals is to remove the filth of evil intellect from the company of saints.
- “Catch the unbearable and burn it; Capture and kill the indestructible; Leave your doubts behind, and then you will drink in the nectar.”
- “The master of man and beast works in all; His presence is scattered everywhere; And no one is there to see.”
- “By the grace of God, I am healed from the disease of ego, and death no longer frightens me.”
