Gurugram: With Navratri Around the corner, several organizations under the banner of Samyukta Hindu Sangharsh Samiti (SHSS) have written to the Deputy Commissioner seeking directions to shut down all meat shops during the nine-day festivities in the city. The organizations have also called for a “permanent ban” on all “illegal” meat shops.
We have been opposing it for the last four-five years. There are 150 registered meat shops in Gurugram. But there are thousands of such shops which are running illegally. We have written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner demanding their permanent closure. Rajeev Mittal, who identified himself as the spokesperson of SHSS. The group claims 24 organizations as its members.
Mittal said he has sought directions to close all meat shops in the city during Navratri, which begins on Thursday. “In the past, there have been instances when the administration has failed to shut down meat shops during the festival and this has led to debate among different groups,” he alleged.
The group also expressed concern over offering namaz in public places, saying it causes inconvenience to the people. Gurugram Police has designated sites for prayers after some organizations in the past tried to disrupt Friday prayers in the city.
Meat shop operators said their businesses have already suffered heavy losses before 2020 and closing shops for about 10 days will only add to the problems.
“Closing any shop means big loss for the owner. Since last year, our business has suffered a lot. If we close our shops for several days now, it will affect us more,” said Pritam BhagatMeat shop owner.
For the past few years, many meat shops in the city have remained closed during Navratri.
