The doctor was touched by the kindness of his late patient’s family, who visited him months later and fed him laddoos.
In a world of social media, where people often share happy moments and milestones, a tweet from a doctor about “laddoos” may seem unusual. But for this doctor, it was a reminder of a patient who deeply touched his life. The tweet read, “Chautha Laddu.” The doctor explained that he was treating a patient named Paul, who had been suffering from alcohol use disorder for more than 15 years. Despite his efforts to help his patient overcome his alcohol addiction and improve his health, Paul, unfortunately, experienced a relapse and eventually passed away due to severe alcohol-related hepatitis.
However, even in the face of this tragedy, the doctor was touched by the kindness of Paul’s wife, who visited him months later and presented him with three laddoos, a traditional Indian sweet. One from his side, two from his daughters. The fourth ladoo, the doctor realised, was missing as it would have been given by Paul himself, if he had not died. This poignant moment is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of showing kindness and understanding to those struggling with addiction.
“Three laddus. One for her and two daughters,” read the tweet. The doctor further added, “But I could only think of that fourth laddu. Which I never got from Paul, because he died. A woman lost her husband, two promising children lost their father.”
Fourth laddu. These 3 laddoos were given to me by my patient’s wife a few weeks back on her birthday.
She was happy now and the family was doing well for themselves.

Paul and his family’s story touched hearts across the Internet and it broke as a sad reminder of the destructive power of addiction. It is a reminder that addiction not only affects the person but their loved ones as well. Many wanted the doctor to post this heart-wrenching story in Hindi and other languages so that it could reach more people. Others cheered him on to hold his head high. “This is very heartbreaking.
