Congress General Secretary Harish Rawat has posted a video on social media which purportedly shows a man ticking and signing several postal ballot papers at the Army Centre. Sharing the video on his Twitter handle and Facebook on Tuesday, Rawat said, “I am sharing a short video for everyone’s information. It shows how a man can sign multiple ballot papers in an army center. Will the Election Commission take cognizance of it?” When asked about the tweet, Rawat’s spokesperson Surendra Kumar declined to divulge the source of the video, but claimed it was from Uttarakhand.
He said the party has not yet made a formal complaint to the Election Commission in this regard, but it can take suo motu cognizance of it. Congress leaders termed it a “joke of democracy” and urged the Election Commission to take cognizance of the video and take action against the culprits. The state Congress has retweeted Rawat’s tweet. Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly Pritam Singh said, “In this video, which is making a mockery of democracy in these, a man is seen at the Army Center signing several postal ballot papers in favor of the party of his choice.
Responding to the tweet, BJP termed it as Congress’s desperation and said that the party is doing this because it is seeing its defeat in the recently held assembly elections. “Congress is adopting such tactics as it knows that it has failed to mislead the people. In view of its imminent defeat, the party which was earlier talking about EVM rigging is now talking about ballot paper. This shows the desperation of the party,” state BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chouhan said.
Chouhan said that the army should be kept away from politics and the Congress should refrain from making such allegations without checking the veracity of such allegations.
