Harley-Davidson has recalled some units of the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 as well as the Harley-Davidson Sportster S in the US. The recall has been issued due to a software issue in the instrument cluster of the affected bikes. Pan America 1250 and Sportster S 3,917 units have been affected by the recall. According to the details of the recall released by Harley-Davidson, the TFT on the affected bikes of these models fails to display the instrument console, speedometer and neutral gear indicator when the ambient temperature drops below freezing.

Affected motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 123, which covers “Motorcycle Controls and Displays” and need to be recalled and fixed. The affected motorcycle will display an error message upon start-up. If an owner ignores the message and decides to ride the affected motorcycle anyway, there may be a potential risk of an accident due to the lack of a speedometer and/or neutral indicator.
The recall has also affected certain units of the Harley-Davidson Sportster S.

To fix the problem, Harley-Davidson has released a software update that will be available for free at dealerships. Several Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 motorcycles sold in the US between May 24, 2021 and October 19, 2021 and Sportster S manufactured between May 21, 2021 and December 13, 2021 are affected by the recall. Both the Pan America 1250 and the Sportster S are offered for sale in India as well, but it is not clear if any of the motorcycles sold in India are likely to be affected by the same issue.
