HC allows Monson’s plea to consult lawyer in jail

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday allowed Monson Mavunkal, a self-styled antiques dealer and accused in cheating and POCSO cases, to interact with his lawyer at the high-security jail in Thrissur’s Viyur on November 17.

Accepting a petition filed by the accused, Justice Kausar Edappagath ordered the jail superintendent to make arrangements for smooth interaction between the petitioner and his lawyer as per jail rules. The Superintendent may depute any officer to inspect the petitioner as well as his counsel. Thus the officer deputed should not stand within hearing distance of him.

The court observed that the right of an accused to consult his lawyer was very valuable.
