Inflow of water into households more likely to increase cases of leptospirosis
The apprehension of possible outbreak of waterborne diseases in the flood-affected areas of Ernakulam following heavy rains has prompted the health wing to take preventive measures.
Medical officers have been asked to maintain vigil and strengthen measures to contain the spread of the pandemic. With over 1,000 people in relief camps in flood-hit areas including North Paravoor, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam and Aluva, health officials have deployed ASHA workers to keep a close watch on the camps.
“Apart from ASHA workers, medical officers will also ensure that patients affected by non-communicable diseases and those in need of palliative care are given special attention in relief camps. We have ensured supply of medicine to the relief camps opened in the district,” said district medical officer Sridevi S.
Officials said the spurt in cases of leptospirosis is more likely due to the inflow of water into many households. The health department will provide doxycycline prophylaxis free of charge to people, especially those who are in constant contact with soil and water.
Dr Sridevi said the health wing would learn from its SRADDA (Surveillance and Prompt Action Against Diseases Post Disaster) campaign, which had earned praise during the 2018 floods. As part of the initiative, health workers will visit flood-affected areas and homes to expedite measures to contain the spread of the pandemic.
Health officials have requested people from low-lying areas affected by the floods to disinfect their homes. Care must be taken to check the quality of water drawn from wells or other sources to avoid waterborne diseases. They should seek medical attention if they experience fever, body aches or associated symptoms.
