The Melapalayam weekly cattle market which would be organised here on every Tuesday, witnessed brisk business as the butchers and the traders in large number purchased the sheep to be sacrificed on Bakrid to be celebrated on June 7.

As this market would attract traders and butchers from all southern districts and neighbouring Kerala on Tuesdays, today’s market witnessed the sale of over 2,500 sheep, over 1,000 goats and 200 bulls were sold. Apart from this roosters were also sold like hotcakes at higher price ranging from ₹500 to ₹1,200.

The sheep were sold at the price ranging from ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 and the well-grown sheep weighing 25 Kg fetched ₹25,000 and even above if the horns were twisted.

“Since the Muslims would sacrifice sheep and bulls on Bakrid for sharing the meat with the poor and the relatives, demand for well-grown animals was heavy,” the traders said.
