Here’s Why You’re Attracting Mosquitoes More Than Others

Staying outside in hot or humid weather and not hearing swatting and mosquitoes is much less common for people. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing full sleeves or there’s a repellent coil burning somewhere, do you always end up with an itchy mosquito bite? If your answer is yes, have you ever wondered why mosquitoes are attracted to you only? Well, there may be a scientific reason for mosquitoes to behave this way.

Here are some reasons:

1. Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Humans breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Detection and perception of common host volatiles by mosquitoes, according to the research title: CO2 responses inhibit host-acquiring behavior, submitted to Royal Society Publishing, Different breeds of mosquitoes respond differently to carbon dioxide emissions does. This showed that even if there were slight fluctuations in CO2, it alerts the host-seeking mosquito and attracts them to move towards that area.

2. Body odor

Mosquitoes are attracted to a number of compounds such as lactic acid and ammonia present on human skin and sweat that release distinctive odors that attract these blood-feeding insects.

3. Carboxylic Acid

The Guardian recently reported on research that found that the presence of carboxylic acids on the skin of attractive hosts keeps these insects loyal and makes the host their favorite. The higher the level of this acid, the more mosquitoes you attract.

In the experiment, 64 volunteers participated, who were asked to wear nylon stockings around their forearms, which were then put into separate nets at the end of a long tube and released dozens of mosquitoes. They found that the insects would flock to the most attractive host. The attractive host was found to produce more carboxylic acids than the others.

To deter mosquitoes’ attention, it’s important to understand which skin odors they are attracted to, which, in turn, help develop an effective repellent.
