It seems that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not allow Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to take all the credit for the movement that led to the creation of the state and brought them to power.
The state BJP has expressed its intention to make it an election issue, as it has put up an exhibition detailing every protest and movement at its national executive committee meeting site that led to the creation of the state.
Here are some of the photos displayed: A framed photo of the Kakinada resolution, the Andhra Pradesh State Executive meeting held in July 1997 that supports the creation of Telangana.
A photograph of 24-year-old scholar Shrikant Chari, who was martyred earlier in the protest against Telangana statehood.
“Furthermore, 1200 students died by suicide in protest against the adamant attitude of the Congress government,” read one of the demonstrations.
Also on display are photographs of Eatala Rajendran, now a BJP leader, details of the ABVP ‘Ranabhari’ at Nizam Maidan in 2010, where BJP leader Sushma Swaraj addressed the gathering.
The then state president G Kishan Reddy had started the 3,500 km journey as part of the Telangana Poru Yatra. Journey started by the then BJP President Nitin Gadkari Demanded the then UPA government to introduce the Telangana State Bill in the Parliament.
Party sources said that not only the TRS, but the BJP also has a long history and contribution to the movement.
“Credit does not go only to TRS. Our leaders have struggled to get statehood for Telangana,” said a senior party leader.
National General Secretary CT Ravi, speaking on the party highlighting its role in the creation of Telangana at a time when elections are due in the state, blamed the Congress for the violent agitation before the creation of Telangana.
“Our party supported Telangana, but the Congress could not manage it well. During the Vajpayee era, we carved Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand amicably. Congress could not do this. If we were in power, Telangana could also have been carved amicably,” Ravi said.
“TRS tried to steal the credit of Telangana state from others and that is why the founders of that movement left TRS and joined BJP. He is not the only one who has given statehood to Telangana. Our leader late Sushma Swaraj led the Telangana state movement,” said Tarun Chugh, BJP in-charge Telangana and national general secretary.
