Highlights of PM’s speech: Booster dose announced, Vaccines for children

India will start immunizing children aged 15 to 18 from January 3 next year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in a surprise address to the nation tonight.

He said healthcare and frontline workers would be provided a “precautionary dose” from January 10 next year.

People above 60 years of age who have co-morbidities will also have the option of taking a booster dose on the recommendation of doctors. It will also start from January 10.

The Prime Minister said that as people prepare to welcome the New Year with hope and celebration, it is also a time to be careful as the highly contagious Omicron variant is rapidly increasing the number of COVID infections.

He appealed to the people not to panic but to be careful and alert. “Use a mask and wash hands regularly,” he said.

PM Modi assured the citizens that all possible preparations are being made to deal with the increasing infection. He listed the number of hospital beds, available oxygen beds and the progress of vaccinations.

He said, “Kovid has not come in front of us yet. It is very important to be careful.”

“Today, the nation has 18 lakh isolation beds, 5 lakh oxygen-supported beds, 1.4 lakh ICU beds and 90,000 special beds for children. Today, we have over 3,000 functional PSA oxygen plants and provide 4 lakh oxygen cylinders to all. states,” he said.

He said, “Apart from research on vaccines, we were also working on approval processes, supply chain, distribution, training, IT support systems and certification. With these efforts, India started immunization of its citizens on 16 January this year. Did.”

“Today, more than 61 percent of India’s adult population has received both doses of the vaccine. Similarly, nearly 90 percent of the adult population has received a single dose of the vaccine,” he said.
