Hijab row: Karnataka classes 11-12 to reopen on Wednesday

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai ordered that proper security arrangements be made on campuses as schools and colleges reopen this week after a bandh over the hijab controversy. Mr Bommai has promised a set of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) on the use of hijab, as well as underlined that “everyone should follow the High Court’s direction” in the matter.

The Karnataka High Court is hearing petitions by girl students challenging the ban on the use of head scarves in educational institutions – a case that has sparked violent protests across the state since December.

In a meeting with ministers this evening, the Chief Minister called for the reopening of PU colleges from February 16. In the meeting, the Chief Minister directed the officials to make security arrangements when the college opens.

Earlier today, Mr Bommai announced the resumption of classes up to class 10th.

“Today evening, I will attend a meeting with our Education Minister. We will discuss what has happened and will issue SOPs. Everyone should follow the High Court’s direction,” he said in a tweet.
