On February 11, the Karnataka High Court had issued an interim order prohibiting students from wearing saffron shawls, hijabs, and religious flags or similar within classrooms, regardless of religion.

The three-judge bench had said, “Whether wearing the hijab in class in the light of constitutional guarantees is a part of the essential religious practice of Islam, needs a thorough examination.”

The ensuing law and order situation in the state had forced the government to shut down the educational institutions on February 8, 2022.

Schools in the state are scheduled to open from February 14, while colleges will reopen from February 17.
