The Himachal Pradesh government approved the old pension scheme during its first cabinet meeting on Friday. The move was termed as a “Lohri gift” to the 1.36 lakh employees who are currently registered under the new pension scheme.

When the new decision was taken, the employees were overjoyed and started dancing to the tune of “Nati”, a local folk dance. Various employee unions have appreciated the decision and thanked the government.

State BJP chief Suresh Kashyap, however, accused the government of misleading the employees on the OPS issue and said the Congress had failed to implement the guarantee given by it in ten days and also deferred payment of dues.

In the first meeting of the government, the Congress party had promised to take a decision to restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and it kept its promise. The cabinet also decided to adopt Election Manifesto of the Congress Party as a policy document of the Government.

  1. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said: “During her election tour, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi asked us to promise restoration of OPS and we included it in the manifesto and fulfilled the promise in the first cabinet meeting.”
  2. He said that the benefit of the old pension scheme would be given from January 13, 2023 and a notification in this regard would be issued soon.
  3.   4. Accusing the previous government of financial mismanagement, the Chief Minister said that his government has not only got a loan liability of Rs 75,000 crore, but also a liability of Rs 11,000 crore belonging to employees and pensioners.
  5. The BJP government has not paid Rs 4,430 crore to employees, Rs 5,226 crore to pensioners and Rs 1,000 crore of 6th Pay Commission dearness allowance.

Under the New Pension Scheme (NPS), employees and the government contributed 10 per cent and 14 per cent respectively and an amount of Rs 8,000 crore is lying with the central government, which is reluctant to reimburse the amount but the government did without knowing it. and Sukhu said a three per cent increase in GST on diesel would help in raising additional funds.

Sukhu reiterated that the state government has not reinstated OPS for votes, but to protect the social security and self-respect of the employees who created the history of development of Himachal Pradesh. He said that the matter has been studied in depth and despite some objections by the finance officers, the issue has been resolved and all employees under NPS will be covered under OPS.

Sukhu also said that the government de-notified over 900 institutions opened by the previous BJP government without a budget, as an amount of Rs 5,000 crore was required to make them functional, adding that tough decisions had to be taken.   9. Employees joining government service from January 1, 2004 are covered under NPS. The new pension scheme is a contributory scheme in which the government and employees contribute 10 and 14 per cent of the salary, respectively, to the pension fund, whereas in the old pension scheme, employees with 20 years of service got 50 per cent of the last drawn salary. as pension.
