In November, Kore-eda announced that he would be working on a TV and film project for Netflix. The director said that he would work with several younger directors on the series, although he would direct several episodes himself.
Later this year, “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” from Story Inc. and Bun-Buku Inc. is set in Kyoto’s geisha district, as protagonist Kiyo becomes a maknai (cooking person) in a house where Maiko. (Apprentice Geisha) live together. The story depicts the everyday life of his childhood friend Kiyo Miko Sumire, who accompanied him to Kyoto from Aomori, amidst a vibrant world of geisha and maiko courtiers.

On “The Makanai,” the filmmaker will be joined by producer Genki Kawamura and upcoming directors Megumi Tsuno, Hiroshi Okuyama and Takuma Sato. The cast of the series includes Nana Mori, Natsuki Deguchi, Aju Makita, Keiko Matsuzaka, Ai Hashimoto, Mayu Matsuoka and Takako Tokiwa.
Kore-eda said that the story of Maiko Housse “is not a story of people left behind in time, but a story that may give us clues as to how we should live in a post-COVID world.” “After receiving the offer from (producer) Kawamura, I actually went to Gion several times. There, I marveled at how the people living in Maiko House were like a family without blood ties, and how the whole city felt like creatures connected by telephone wires. ,
