‘Hockey’ review: Marvel’s fun Christmas series hits the bullseye

Do they know it’s Christmas? Disney Sure Does, But That’s No Reason To Dislike It HawkeyeClint Barton/Hockey (Jeremy Renner) miniseries following the horrors, grief and loss of 2019 Avengers: Endgame. Barton is in New York for the holidays with his kids, Cooper (Ben Sakamoto), Lila (Ava Russo), and Nathaniel (Cade Woodward), when he meets his biggest fan, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

Kate loses her father in the Battle of New York and, in the devastation, sees this lone superhero fighting a Chitauri with a bow and arrow and is impressed. Now 22-year-old Kate considers Hawkeye as her role model. While winning every archery and martial arts trophy, he is to the dismay of his mother Eleanor (Vera Farmiga), unaware of the consequences, for a habit of getting herself into trouble.

At a posh party, Kate learns that Eleanor is engaged to marry Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton). She also stumbles upon an underground auction of items found at the Avengers compound. A Russian gang, the Tracksuit Mafia, sabotages the auction and defeats them with Kate wearing a ronin suit (uh-oh).

Barton is trying to put it together while watching meanwhile Rogers the Musical, Where the Avengers sing and dance from the ceiling while saving the world.

Seeing the Ronin suit back in vogue, Barton, who was Ronin in reaction to losing his family in the blip, states that he has to help Kate as she is followed by people seeking retribution for her actions as Ronin. .

A murder, a dog called Lucky who loves pizza, a mother who can hide important details from her daughter, a missing watch, larpers, a killer, a daughter who seeks to avenge her father’s death. In doing so, a crime lord named Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) faces a number of obstacles in order to get home for Christmas.

Happiness, even though it may take some time for peace and goodwill to emerge from the catastrophe, Hawkeye is attractive. Rainer and Steinfeld have a sharp chemistry and the action sequences have just the right amount of zip – fun with lovely pops of color.

Considering the festive season, the opposition, Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) and Yelena/Black Widow (Florence Pugh) are highly trained and very capable, but at last count, great opponents. New York is beautiful as expected during Christmas, and there is a guest appearance in one of the battle scenes of the giant glowing sparkly tree with a wisecracking owl.

Not all Christmas carols, mistletoe and ornaments feel cheaply manipulative. They add to the celebratory spirit of appreciating an every hero who curses regardless when his hearing aid is broken. And then there’s Lucky – order a pizza for him in advance!
