Honda CEO Says Toyota’s Plan Is Flawed
has said that Toyota’s commitment and proposition to hydrogen powertrains are flawed. He said Honda had pursued the technology a decade ago and deemed it unsuitable for cars, but that did not result in the Japanese giant abandoning the technology entirely.
“We’ve researched every possibility out there. For the hydrogen engine, we see some tough technical challenges. So, about 10 years ago, we decided it wouldn’t become mainstream,” he said.
Toyota has been a major proponent of hydrogen cars but until recently it was very much against electric cars. It is also aggressively pursuing hybrid cars like the Camry which are also sold in India.
But Honda has a more balanced view of the situation – where Mibe believes for personal mobility, electric powertrains will be the way to go. However, when it comes to the future of aircraft, Honda Motors also has a jet engine subsidiary that is working on hydrogen. Several companies are also considering hydrogen for trucking where it could be viable in the world of logistics where Honda has been a player.
“If we look at what will become mainstream, it will probably be EVs for small mobility, and fuel cells for big mobility. This is the conclusion so far,” Mibe explained.

Mibe has committed that Honda will phase out the internal combustion engine by 2040 and focus on battery electric vehicles and fuel cell-based vehicles to reach zero emissions.
