How to check the oil in your vehicle

It is essential for every car owner to check their engine oil, and every car owner should know how to complete this small maintenance project. Modern cars today come with an oil replacement interval of 10,000 km or more.

You must remember that you can damage the internal parts of your engine if you have low engine oil. If the engine is not properly oiled, then your car can also be damaged. As an exercise, you should check your engine oil and check it every couple of weeks. Your engine needs oil to function smoothly, and you must ensure that your engine gets enough oil so that it remains in healthy shape.

Oil is a lubricant for the inside of the engine and helps keep the engine clean, prevents dirt buildup, and prevents the engine from overheating.

Make sure your engine is cold.

You should always check your engine oil when it is cold. If your engine is hot let it cool down, and wait before moving on to the next steps. Refer to the car manual as some car manufacturers do not suggest checking your engine oil on a cold engine.

Lay your car flat, park it and pop the hood.

Park your car where the ground is level. Parking your vehicle on a slanted or inclined deck will result in incorrect engine oil levels. Once you’re on plain ground, pop the hood off for further inspection. Make sure you have turned off your car before you start checking your engine oil.

Check the yellow dipstick in your engine.

Once you open the bonnet, you will see a yellow dipstick which will be in the middle of the engine. You should take it out and wipe with a clean cloth.

Once you clean it, put it back in and then take it out after a few seconds. You will notice the oil mark and sense the oil level. The ideal oil mark should be between the minimum and maximum marking. The dipstick almost always has a low, high or min/max reading.

Needless to say, if the oil is low, top it up as soon as possible. Remember to use the same engine oil and do not change the oil grade. Also, remember not to top-up more than the recommended level.

oil filler cap

You can top this up by using the oil filler cap which you will find near the dipstick. Remember to be careful and try not to spill oil on any other part of the engine. Give it a few seconds before checking the oil level again.

Check your oil every two weeks and replace it if your oil is dirty. If it is low, be sure to top it up to the optimum level. A normal level doesn’t require you to do anything.
