We have come to a stage where each of us is surrounded by battery operated devices including our personal vehicles. Well, just like we try to maintain our phone battery, we need to maintain the battery of EVs too!
Aging is one of the major factors that play a role in the degradation of battery life but not the only one. There are many other factors that affect the battery health of EVs as well. So let’s talk about all of them without further delay.
When parked, minimize exposure to high temperatures:
When exposed to extreme heat while parked and unplugged, an automatic temperature control system installed in your EV will begin working to maintain the optimum temperature. The EV must be plugged in while parked or in the shade so that the EV’s thermal management system can function without consuming the EV battery.
Minimize time spent at 0% and 100%
Typically, electric vehicles already have a battery management system that protects them from overcharging and discharging when they are overcharged. Still try not to leave your EV plugged in all night every night as it’s not a healthy choice for your battery life. The same goes for keeping it at 0% for a long time. If you are not going on long trips, try to keep the battery condition of your EV between 20-80%.
Avoid Fast Charging:
It can be convenient to use fast charging occasionally, but don’t make it routine. Because high voltage DC charging stresses your EVs battery and reduces its life exponentially.
When parked, exposure to low temperatures decreases:
It’s again a matter of maintaining your EV’s temperature without it having to use up your battery. EVs usually have a thermal management system that automatically starts working to maintain the temperature of the battery. This system can automatically run using the EVS battery until the battery drops to 15%. So, try to keep it plugged in when parked at a low temperature.
Avoid Quick Discharge:
Try to resist the urge to fully push that acceleration pedal when it’s not needed. As much as you like it, pushing your EV to high speeds with Quick Launch can only drain your battery life faster than ideal driving.
0 notes
A decrease in your EVs battery life is inevitable due to calendar aging. But now you know how not to reduce it too fast and how to manage its health to increase its lifespan.
