A recent report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) states that if India does not generate enough jobs and its workers are not adequately prepared for those jobs, its demographic dividend could turn into a liability. Despite having the largest youth population in the world, less than 17 percent of Indian graduates are immediately employable. On average, about 250 applicants are reviewed for a job offer and data shows that recruiters spend up to 23 hours looking for good resumes for a successful hire.
A good CV puts the first impression in the mind of the recruiter enabling them to make an informed decision in terms of investing in the right candidate. So here a set of questions revolve around the fact that what makes a good CV. layout? Subject? The answers to these questions make a potential candidate’s CV stand out from the rest and boost his/her credibility. Below are a list of some simple yet effective ways to craft a good CV to make the right impression:
Outcomes Over Responsibilities: What makes a typical CV different from the rest is how the candidate highlights the results rather than listing his/her previous responsibilities. While carrying responsibilities is a good marker, it does not help to build a picture of what the candidate has achieved beyond those responsibilities. Results should always be supported with achievements and problem solving strategies. So for example if a candidate is a social media manager, he should write “I increased a brand’s social media engagement by 48 percent in one year”
Highlight the growth trajectory: The journey should highlight how the candidate has evolved in each role, and how they ultimately chose their career path. It would be great to create a link between the different jobs so that the journey looks like a natural progression. Additionally, the candidate should mention takeaways from each job role as it will show the recruiter that the individual has learned a lot from their previous roles, and that they are committed to learning and expanding their skill set.
Keep it neat: We have often seen that most of the people put too much information in their resume which makes the document incomprehensible. It is important to weigh in on what to pour and how to pour. Stick to the basics and maintain a general aesthetic throughout. Make sure simple things like grammar and spelling are correct.
Adapt for the job: The candidate should draft the CV as per the job description defined by the employer and explain why they are the right candidate for the role. Also, it is beneficial to link achievements to elements of the job role because employers want candidates to understand the role they are applying for. Thus putting forward what they are looking for in a CV will set it apart from the rest.
Resume verb words: Incorporating words such as adaptable, innovative, implemented and achieved for each role and following it up with impressive results or outcomes will help to demonstrate what the candidate has delivered over the past term. Many companies use database software to filter candidates who have used certain keywords, so make sure you study the job description clearly and know what the recruiter is looking for.
Mention job preference: Living in a post covid world, candidates must ensure that they clearly mention their work preference in their CV as recruiters are now very specific about hiring employees who work from office, home or want to follow a hybrid model.
