Assam Police has recovered a huge cache of sophisticated arms and ammunition, including AK-47s, in western Assam’s Kokrajhar district, police said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off that some sophisticated weapons were hidden in Ultapani and Selekguri forest areas of Kokrajhar district, a massive operation was launched and three AK-56, one AK-47, one sniper rifle, one M, a police officer said, a police official said. .-16 rifle, one Cerilli rifle, four magazines and 130 rounds of ammunition of AK series rifles.

The arms and ammunition are said to be of former militants of the National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) and United Liberation of Bodoland (ULB) organizations.

The three-day long operation under the leadership of Kokrajhar district’s Superintendent of Police Prateek V Thubey began on Saturday and ended on Monday.

The use of these weapons could lead to various illegal activities in the Bodo Territorial Area (BTR), police said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is holding the Home Ministry, lauded the success of the police in the sensitive Kokrajhar district.

With the surrender of a large number of extremists during the last two years, the Bodo insurgency was more or less under control in the BTR in western Assam, which includes the four western districts of Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri and Kokrajhar, bordering Bhutan and West Bengal. .
