One such possible replacement is the hydrogen combustion engine, where the primary source of energy is hydrogen. The question on the minds of experts is whether hydrogen combustion engines will ever be viable enough for general use!

What are Hydrogen Combustion Engines?

Hydrogen combustion engines are primarily conventional combustion engines designed to run on hydrogen instead of gasoline.

Advantages of Hydrogen Combustion Engine

There are several benefits that make a strong case for a hydrogen combustion engine:

  • The exhaust gas mainly consists of water vapor. This is the main reason why hydrogen combustion engines are being preferred. Occasionally, some carbon dioxide may be released as a residue.
  • The thermal efficiency of these engines (about 45%) is much higher than that of petrol (25-30%) and diesel engines (30-38%).
  • These engines, which comply with strict emissions laws, can have negligible NOx emissions.

Why haven’t these become viable for use yet?

The industry still faces a number of challenges when it comes to hydrogen combustion engines:

  • Hydrogen tanks require large storage space, and significantly increase the weight of the vehicle, increasing the risk of breakage.
  • Because the energy density is so low, the overall power and torque generated by these engines is much lower than that of conventional combustion engines.
  • A compression ratio of 40:1 is required, which is extremely difficult (petrol only needs 8:1).
  • Because fuel burns so easily, pre-ignition and knocking are major hazards to many engine parts. The engine often backfires too!
  • Even though hydrogen has been chosen for its low emissions, it leaves a greater carbon footprint than conventional fuels which defeats the main purpose of this combustion engine.
  • Mass production of hydrogen combustion engines is a costly affair!

It is very clear that the disadvantages or challenges of the hydrogen combustion engine outweigh the benefits. This raises the question whether these engines are worth it. It is highly unlikely that these engines will ever be used on a large scale. But, alternatives to hydrogen combustion engines, namely hydrogen cells, could be a very important step towards the complete electrification of vehicles. Hydrogen fuel cells are much more compact and easier to produce while leading to the least amount of emissions. The researchers’ ultimate goal is to produce vehicles that are zero-emissions and capable of delivering peak performance with zero-emissions fuel. Hydrogen fueled engines as well as torque vectoring are being actively developed to increase the efficiency of EVs!
