Virender Sehwag and Shoaib Akhtar
Former India opener Virender Sehwag recalled his ODI debut against Pakistan in Mohali in 1999 when he received constant abuses from the opposition.
Sehwag came out to bat at number seven and was dismissed by fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for just one run.
“I was around 20-21 years old at that time. When I went to bat, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Yusuf and all other Pakistan team members greeted me with a lot of abuse. I didn’t even know anything. By them About the bad words used,” Sehwag recalled RJ Raunak on his YouTube channel.
“I couldn’t say much in reply as it was my first game as well as nervous. Around 20-25 thousand people came to watch the game,” Sehwag said.
The 42-year-old who commented today said that the reception he gets gives him goosebumps.
“But later once I got settled in the team, I responded to all the abuses with a triple century and a kind of revenge when I toured Pakistan in 2003-04. That’s why I think whenever India I get goosebumps even when I play for Pakistan,” Sehwag said.
