ICC Twenty20 World Cup | Australia wants nothing less than title: Mitchell Starc

Australia have won just six in their last 21 matches in T20 cricket and have lost five series in a row.

Australia pacer Mitchell Starc on Sunday said that they can defy their recent slide in the shortest format and win the T20 World Cup as they are going into the tournament with full force.

Australia have won just six in their last 21 matches in T20 cricket and have lost five consecutive series against England, India, New Zealand, West Indies and Bangladesh.

“We had really young, inexperienced players and some young players playing their first game of cricket for Australia and came in some really exotic conditions and threw in the deep end really quickly,” Starc told reporters. “

“We have had some difficulties getting back home for people living in lockdown in Sydney or Melbourne or playing very little cricket for their states.” Starc said that Australia’s move from top to seventh in the T20 rankings in May last year is misleading and irrelevant for the T20 World Cup.

“It is a huge positive that we have our full-strength team available for the World Cup. Obviously we didn’t have that through the West Indies and Bangladesh,” Starc said.

“Obviously we have some people here in the IPL as well, so it is a mixed bag of preparation for everyone. Some are playing some cricket, some are looking for ways to prepare for this tour. In the last six editions of the T20 World Cup, Australia have reached the final only once – in 2010 when they lost to England.

“It’s no secret that we haven’t won the T20 World Cup so I’m looking forward to being a part of my first World Cup,” Starc said.

“We have got a team with our full strength available… it is up to us now. We are ready to win the World Cup. We want nothing less,” said the 31-year-old left-arm pacer.

Australia will start their campaign against South Africa here on 23 October.

“In terms of our make-up, the group feels we have covered all the bases that we need for these conditions,” said Starc, who took 51 wickets in 41 T20 Internationals. “I feel good about it. We all have played enough cricket to know what we need to do to prepare ourselves the best for this kind of tournament.”
