India continued their unbeaten march into the ongoing ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022, bypassing Australia’s challenge with a massive 96-run victory in the semi-finals played on Wednesday. India entered the tournament for their fourth consecutive, eighth overall final and will now take on England in the title clash.
Captain Yash Dhull’s scintillating century and his double century with his deputy Sheikh Rashid for the second wicket helped India post a massive total of 290/5. In reply, Australia were bowled out for 194 in 41.5 overs and will now take on Afghanistan in the third place playoff match.
ICC U19 WC Semifinals: IND vs AUS Highlights
Dhul opted to bat first at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua, but India suffered two early setbacks, losing both their openers Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Harnoor Singh within eight overs. Dhul and Rashid took up the repair work and reinvented themselves.
Dhul became the third Indian captain to score a century in the U19 World Cup and scored 110 runs in a single ball, an innings that included 10 fours and a six. Rashid, however, missed out on his own century as he was dismissed for 94 with eight fours and a six.
Dhul and Rashid put together 204 runs for the third wicket.
India went ballistic in the last 10 overs as they added 108 runs including 27 runs from the final over to post a challenging target.
Australia were pinged early when Ravi Kumar dismissed opener Teague Wyllie for 1 in the second over of their chase. However, Corey Miller and Campbell Kelaway led the recovery with a 68-run partnership for the second wicket to get the innings back on track.
However, once the spinners were introduced, India firmly took control of the competition with regular strikes. Only Lachlan Shaw survived the carnage, hitting a half-century – 51 off 66 – as the Vicky Ostwal-led Indian spin attack ran through their line-up.
Ostwal took three wickets while Nishant Sindhu and Ravi Kumar took two wickets each. Raghuvanshi and Kaushal Tambe took a wicket each.
Brief Scores: India Under-19s 290/5 (Yash Dhul 110, Sheikh Rashid 94; Jack Nisbet 2/41) beat Australia Under-19s 194 (Lachlan Shaw 51; Vicky Ostwal 3/42) by 96 runs
