WhatsApp has become an integral part of our daily lives. However, with the increasing use of this instant messaging app, cases of hacking and cybercrime are also rising rapidly. Hackers are employing numerous tricks to gain access to personal data.

There are, however, some signs of suspicious activity on WhatsApp that, if recognised, can help one avoid being hacked.

These are some signs which can enable a user to know if one’s WhatsApp account has been compromised:

Addition of unknown contacts: If unknown contacts appear on one’s WhatsApp, which they have never added, it is a clear sign that one’s account has been hacked.

Chat with unknown contacts: If an unknown person is chatting on one’s account without one’s knowledge, this can also be a sign of hacking.

Login problem: If one is unable to log in to one’s WhatsApp account despite repeated attempts, a hacker may have accessed the account.

Repeated arrival of verification code: If WhatsApp repeatedly sends verification codes, one should not dismiss them. This indicates that someone is trying to compromise the account.

These are the ways to avoid being hacked:

  • Turn on two-step verification and set a strong PIN.
  • Avoid clicking on unknown links and ignore suspicious messages.
  • Change the password from time to time to keep the account safe.
  • If one feels that their account has been hacked, one can contact WhatsApp’s helpline immediately.
  • One should be alert and should not ignore signs that suggest that the account has been hacked. These minor steps can help keep one’s personal data safe.
