IIEST launches two research centres with alumni donations

The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country have established two multi-disciplinary research centres, the Arun and Dhriti Deb Center of Water and Environmental Studies (ADDCWES) and the Chirasree Center of Sustainable Infrastructure Development (CCSID), with generous alumni donations. 

Prof Arun Deb, 1957 Civil Engineering graduate of the Institute, has pledged $1 million to set up ADDCWES. This centre will be dedicated to addressing critical water and environmental challenges through innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement. 

The other CCSID has been sponsored by Prof. Sudhangshu Sekhar Chakraborty, a batchmate of Prof. Deb. He has offered financial support of ₹10 crores. This centre will aim to conduct research in energy in transition, next generation energy, building materials, disaster mitigation and adaptation, sustainable transportation, green buildings, frugal revolution, biodiversity and nature-based solutions, digital public infrastructure and other related areas with respect to sustainable infrastructure development. 

According to an official statement shared from the IIEST, they stated, “The centres envisage inter-disciplinary research, advanced electives for UG and PG studies, innovative projects to foster start-ups and also lead to entrepreneurial excellence.” 

The declaration of the two centres was announced by Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for education and development, and Bhartiya Janta Party Lok Sabha MP.
