IIMs violated PhD reservation policy, ‘deprived of seats’ to Dalit students: IIT Bombay student body

According to the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a student organization at IIT Bombay, nine Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have violated the reservation norms for PhD admissions. A total of 188 Dalit Bahujan Adivasi students were denied their seats in IIMs, according to data collected over the last five years through RTI filed by APPSC.

As per legal requirements, 15% seats should be reserved for SC candidates, 7.5 percent for ST, 27 percent for OBC candidates Up to 10 percent for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates and up to 5 percent for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) belonging to the “Non-Creamy Layer” (NCL-OBC).

On social media platform, Twitter, students’ collective has revealed the proportion of students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Caste (OBC) categories in nine different IIMs. “The RTI data received from 9 IIMs shows that they are violating the reservation norms in PhD admissions. In the last 5 years 188 Dalit Bahujan Adivasi students were denied their rightful seats,” it tweeted.

The nine IIMs are IIM Lucknow, Kozhikode, Raipur, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Indore, Shillong, Rohtak and Kashipur.

As per the RTI data obtained by APPSC, the maximum number of students who took admission in IIMs belonged to the general category. Of the total 110 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, 40 have been admitted and 70 have been denied admission. Of the 55 seats reserved in the ST category, only 13 were admitted and 42 were rejected. In OBCs, which have the highest reservation among the three, 123 students out of a total of ₹99 were admitted and 76 were denied admission.
