Officials of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT) in Basar city of Telangana are under increasing pressure to act after a video clip of two workers taking a bath inside the kitchen of a mess went viral.
Students and parents were astonished to see a video of them taking a bath inside the kitchen of one of the three messes on the RGUKT campus, popularly known as IIIT Basar.
Some students captured a video of workers taking a bath and uploaded it on social media. Some mess workers were reportedly using the kitchen for bathing and washing clothes.
Though the officials issued notice to the mess contractor, the students are demanding strict action as it poses a serious health hazard.
Reacting to the video clip, NSUI Telangana unit president Venkata Balamoor on Saturday termed it as derogatory and disgusting. He wanted to know when Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao and education The minister will face the ground reality and help the students by addressing their concerns.
Students are already agitated over the frequent incidents of food poisoning. The latest incident has added to their worries. Some of the students who posted the video on Twitter tagged Telangana Governor, Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy, IT Minister KT Rama Rao and others.
There have been several incidents of food poisoning in the campus. In the latest incident, on August 3, around 100 students had fallen ill. Ten of them were admitted to hospitals, while others were treated on campus. He had developed symptoms of food poisoning.
Earlier on July 15, more than 100 students had fallen ill with complaints of vomiting and diarrhoea. Some of them even fainted. The incident took place less than a month after students held a week-long protest demanding better quality food, drinking water and other facilities.
The students had complained that the quality of the food being served in the hostel mess was substandard. They allege that on several occasions small insects and frogs were found in the hostel food.
They called off their week-long protest on June 21 after Education Minister Indra Reddy visited the institute and assured their problems would be resolved in a phased manner. A delegation of students had met Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in Hyderabad on 3 August and apprised him of the problems being faced by them.
