IIT Bombay team wins $250,000 XP prize, Elon Musk Foundation grant at COP26

A team from IIT Bombay has secured a million dollar worth for developing a technology that can remove carbon from the atmosphere. According to a report published in Hindustan Times – the sister publication of Livemint, four students and two teachers of IIT Bombay have won a grant of $250,000 (approx.). 1.85 crores for new-age technology at the Sustainable Innovation Forum at COP-26 in Glasgow).

The grant has come in collaboration with the XPRIZE Foundation Elon Musk foundation. XPRIZE is a global leader in designing and implementing innovative competition models to solve the world’s biggest challenges.

A team of students – Srinath Iyer (PhD student), Anvesha Banerjee (PhD student), Srishti Bhamare (B.Tech + M.Tech student), and Shubham Kumar (Junior Research Fellow-Earth Science) have created a tri-modular technique that captures carbon dioxide from point sources of emissions and convert them into salts. It is the only team from India to win this award.

XPRIZE and the Musk Foundation announce a grant of US$100 million (approx. 745 crores) in April this year for anyone who can come up with sustainable technology Carbon removal from the environment. Of this, US$5 million (approx.) 37 crore) was a student award.

To win the prize, participants had to demonstrate a working solution to a scale of at least 1000 tonnes removed per year and show a way to achieve the scale of gigatonnes per year in the future.

Arnab Dutta, Department of Chemistry and Technology (IDPCS), one of the two mentors on the project, told the daily that his team has not only tried to capture the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere, but also convert it into another commercial form in industries. converted into viable chemicals. Ensuring them financial benefits.

“Our suggestion is not only to capture this CO2 emitted by industries, but also to convert it into other commercially viable chemicals across industries, thereby ensuring them financial returns while implementing this unique CO2 management programme,” Dutta said.
