IIT Bombay to reopen campus for second, third year students in December

NS Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay Physical classes will resume for undergraduate second year and third year students after a long halt of more than 20 months. The institute is likely to open its gates for students in December after three semesters of online education.

Those who were enrolled in the year 2020 will see their campus for the first time not as freshers but as sophistication. Students have already missed a year of their campus life due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have written to all the second and third year students that we are happy to have them back in December,” S Sudarshan, director, IIT-Bombay, told a leading daily. He also shared the reactions of the students and said that they are very happy to be back on campus.

Meanwhile, final year students were allowed to return to the campus two months ago. While some of them have already returned, others will be back by December before classes begin from January 3. Postgraduate students and PhD students have left their first year and returned to avoid overcrowding in hostels and laboratories. In the recent Senate meeting, it has been decided to open the campus to all.

Recently, the institute directed all students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated at the earliest after five new Covid-19 cases were registered on the campus. Following the orders of the state government, the institute will also collect the vaccination certificates of all the staff and students. People who have not yet been vaccinated will have to undergo rapid antigen tests at regular intervals to prevent the spread of the pandemic and maintain safety protocols.

in between, IIT launches two new certificate programs Digital Transformation and Power Electronics and Motors for Electric Vehicles (EVs). Courses will be provided online in partnership with Coursera
