IIT Gandhinagar PhD alumnus receives Fulbright-Nehru Research Fellowship

Indian Institute technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), alumnus Rahul Kumar has bagged the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2022-23.

Rahul Kumar, who completed his PhD in Mathematics from IITGN in 2021 under the supervision of Professor Atul Dixit, will have to spend two years at Penn State University, USA to pursue his research under this fellowship. Rahul, currently working as a Postdoc Fellow at IBS Center for Geometry and Physics, Pohang University of Science and technology (Postek), South Korea.

Rahul’s PhD research at IITGN focused on analytic number theory and special functions, and he is working on this further in Postech, South Korea. The Department of Mathematics at Penn State University, where he will work for two years beginning in November 2022, is one of the best in the United States in his area of ​​research.

Expressing his views on this achievement, Rahul Kumar said, “I am glad to know that I have been selected for this prestigious fellowship. I sincerely thank USIEF for choosing me for this fellowship. I also thank Professor Bruce Berndt, my PhD guide Professor Atul Dixit, Professor Balasubramaniam and Professor Aksha Vatwani for writing a letter of recommendation for I. Professor Vinnie Lee of Penn State University for supporting my application as a host. I am excited to come and work with the faculty there. This two-year fellowship will provide me with a golden opportunity to broaden my research area and forge new academic collaborations there, which will continue throughout my career. In addition to the educational benefits, this visit will allow me to gain insight into American society and its culture, which is one of the objectives of this fellowship.

Sharing his views, Professor Atul Dixit, Associate Professor of Mathematics at IITGN and Rahul’s PhD Supervisor, said, “I am very pleased that Rahul will be visiting the Department of Mathematics at Penn State University through this fellowship. This is one of his research work. Will add a new dimension and help him grow as a researcher and a person.”

There are only two other Fellows in the United States with a Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Mathematics, and one of them is again an Early Career Fellow from IITGN.

As a recipient of this fellowship, Rahul will also receive J-1 visa assistance and round-trip air travel, a monthly stipend, a professional allowance and accident and illness assistance as per US government guidelines. In addition, the fellowship may also provide him with a dependent allowance and international travel with an eligible dependent.

The awarded fellowship, established by the Fulbright Commission in the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), India, is awarded to only a handful of candidates every year after a rigorous application and interview process. This postdoctoral research fellowship is designed to provide opportunities for talented early career Indian faculty and researchers to strengthen their research capabilities and access some of the best resources in their areas of interest.
