IIT Madras sets up Center for Responsive AI

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) To ensure the ethical and responsible development of AI-based solutions in the real world, the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI), an interdisciplinary research center, has been established. It aims to become one of the premier research center nationally and internationally for both fundamental and applied research in responsible AI with immediate impact in deploying AI systems in the Indian ecosystem.

Google is the first member of the Platinum Consortium and has contributed US$1 million towards the center. The Center for Responsible AI organized its first workshop on ‘Responsible AI for India’ today (15 May 2023). It was formally inaugurated on 27 April 2023 by Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Hon’ble Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India.

Addressing the inaugural session of the workshop, Mr. Abhishek Singh, Managing Director & CEO, Digital India Corporation said, “I am sure that the deliberations and various panels in this workshop today (May 15, 2023) will There will be discussions. Will go a long way in helping us develop our frameworks, our guidelines, and our policies for responsible AI.

Mr. Abhishek Singh said, “AI is playing a major role in the lives of all of us. Whether we know it or not, every day we are using AI-based technologies in some part of our lives. It is very important that those at the policy-making level and those working at the cutting edge of developing technologies are aware of the risks and challenges they pose to solving social problems, ensuring access to health care, making healthcare more affordable and education more affordable. Making agriculture more inclusive and agriculture more productive… There is a need for a non-partisan and non-discriminatory AI framework because we have unique needs that need customization as per our needs.

One of the primary objectives of CeRAI will be to produce high quality research output, such as publishing research articles in high impact journals/conferences, white papers and patents, among others. It will work towards creating curated datasets (universal as well as India-specific), technical resources such as software, toolkits, etc., with respect to the domain of Responsible AI.

Commenting earlier on the arrival of the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras, Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Country Head and Vice President, India, Google, said, “As India’s digital ecosystem rapidly adopts AI and its Taking advantage, we are committed to sharing best practices we have been developing since 2018 when we began supporting responsible AI. To help build the foundation for fairness, interpretability, privacy and security, we are supporting the Indian Institute of Technology Madras with a $1 million grant to establish the first-of-its-kind Multidisciplinary Center for Responsive AI.

A panel discussion on ‘Responsible AI for India’ also took place during the workshop. The center aims to foster various partnerships and collaborations with government organizations, academic institutions and industries. CeRAI is actively engaged.

In the area of Responsible AI, Sikki along with CMC Vellore to work on developing a participatory AI framework with Vidhi Legal, with NASSCOM’s Responsible AI initiative to create course materials, skilling programs and toolkits for Responsible AI In addition to RIS, a think tank of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to explore areas of mutual interest to help its members better understand the implications of Responsible AI and TiE to help mentor startups in this space.

Highlighting the need for such centres, Director, IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti said, “We have now reached a stage where we have to shift the responsibility to AI tools and explain the reasons for the outputs given by AI. Apart from adequate research, aspects of human enhancement, biased data sets, risk of leakage of collected data and introduction of new policies should be addressed. There is a growing need to build trust around AI and it is important to bring up the notion of privacy. As long as domain interpretation exists, AI will not take away jobs.”

Talking about the work being done at the centre, Head of the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI), IIT Madras, Prof. Balaraman Raveendran said, “It is important for an AI model and its predictions to be interpreted and interpreted when applied to various critical sectors/domains such as healthcare, manufacturing and banking/finance, among others. to be deployed in.

Pro. Balaraman Raveendran said, “AI models need to provide performance guarantees suitable for the applications in which they are deployed. This includes data integrity, confidentiality, robustness of decision making, etc. We need assurance and risk models for AI systems. Research is needed to develop.” various areas. CeRAI will also provide sector-specific recommendations and guidelines for policy makers. With the research results achieved, the center will help in the following:

Ø Preparation of sector specific recommendations and guidelines for policy makers

Provide all stakeholders with the necessary toolkits to ensure ethical and responsible management and monitoring of AI systems that are being developed and deployed

The Center also plans to create opportunities to conduct special sensitization/training programs for all stakeholders to better appreciate the issues of ethical and responsible AI so that they can make meaningful contributions to solve problems in the respective domains. be able to It will organize a series of technical events in the form of workshops and conferences on specialized topics of deployable AI systems, with a strong focus on the ethics and responsibility principles that need to be followed.
