A 40-year-old Asian woman died after being hit by a train at New York’s Times Square subway station on Saturday. The man who allegedly thrashed her has been arrested.
Michelle Alyssa Go, who lives on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, was waiting on the platform when she was apparently pushed from behind, fell on the tracks and collided with a train pulling into the station.
Police found woman lying unconscious on Metro tracks; He had severe wounds and internal trauma on his body.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as 61-year-old Simon Marshall, was charged with second-degree murder. After fleeing the scene, he handed himself over to the police in less than an hour.
According to media reports, accused Simon Marshall has a history of mental illness, and claimed that he pushed Go because he “stole his jacket”. He also has a previous criminal record and served two years in prison for robbery, before being released in August 2021.
Asked if he killed Go, Marshall replied, “Yes I did. I am God, I can do it.”
‘unprovoked’ attack
At a press briefing, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the fatal attack was “unprovoked” and that the victim did not interact with the accused.
Commissioner Sewell also noted that just before the attack, Marshall reportedly approached another woman, who feared he would push her to the tracks.
The woman claimed that the accused “broke into her area”, making her feel “very worried”. When she covered some distance between herself and the man, she saw him pushing her in front of the train.
‘Never saw him coming’
The New York Times reported in a report that the victim never saw her attacker approach, and therefore, did not even get a chance to fight him.
Another eyewitness, Maria Coste-Weber, told the New York Times that she saw a man running toward the tracks with his arms outstretched, but she couldn’t react because everything happened so fast.
“He had returned it to this crazy person. He never saw anything… It was so fast, no one realized before it was too late,” Coste-Weber said.
