Imran Khan government filed review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision on the no-confidence motion

Lahore The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision rejecting a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, local media reported. .

The petition, filed by the apex court against the April 7, 2022 judgment, seeks review of the judgment delivered by a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Omar Ata Bandiyal, ARY News reported.

According to sources, the development came after Imran Khan finalized his consultation with legal experts on the matter.

The media outlet quoted sources as saying that the government would plead to postpone the decision and allow the National Assembly to function as per rules.

Notably, in the wake of the apex court’s decision, Imran Khan chaired a meeting of senior party leaders and legal experts ahead of the session of the National Assembly to vote on the no-confidence motion. He also held a telephonic conversation with National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser to discuss strategy for voting on the no-confidence motion.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly Secretariat has made it clear to the Speaker that violation of the apex court’s decision to hold a vote on the no-confidence motion would amount to contempt of court proceedings.

Secretariat officials have conveyed that the implementation of the Supreme Court’s decision is inevitable, the media outlet reported citing sources.

“We have conveyed to the speaker that today there is no way but to vote on the no-confidence motion. If the vote is not held, it will amount to contempt of court,” the media outlet quoted the officials as saying.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the incumbent government to face the no-confidence motion on Saturday. The court had overruled the deputy speaker’s decision to dismiss the no-confidence motion.

The apex court’s directions came after Chief Justice Omar Ata Bandiyal took cognizance of Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri’s decision and the subsequent dissolution of the National Assembly declaring all decisions as unconstitutional.

The court also fixed Saturday’s session with the condition that until the motion is voted on, the session cannot be prorogued, and if Imran Khan loses the no-confidence vote, the next PM will have to do the same. to be selected in the session.
