in public interest

Amid high expectations regarding the conduct of elections in five states, even as our Covid graph is rising, the Election Commission has taken some important decisions. Unveiling the election schedule, it said all physical rallies and road shows have been banned till January 15, when it will review the situation afresh in the light of infection figures. Until then, parties should reach out to their voters in groups of no more than five people through virtual events, pamphlets or door-to-door vote-propaganda.

Given that India’s third wave is not expected to peak before the end of this month, with a heavy reliance on virtual access, these restrictions could be extended. Parties with a weak online presence may find themselves at a disadvantage. It will be difficult to woo voters on the other side of our digital divide. Yet, even if this Omicron-led wave doesn’t overwhelm our health care systems, the wisdom lies in decrying the crowds given the little respect for the Covid protocols so far displayed at political rallies. Democratic processes are necessary, but we should not let the public interest be affected by super-spreader incidents. If the state elections cannot be postponed, then at least ensure that the safety of the people is not compromised.
