Gupta made a special mention of the matter for urgent hearing and said that there was a need for a fresh petition to be moved by the CJI, as Globe Bella M. Trivedi recused himself from hearing the petition.

Regarding the hearing on this petition, Chandrachud said that I will reach as soon as possible. The matter will be listed soon. Earlier, on January 24, Bano’s plea challenging the Gujarat government’s commutation of sentence of 11 convicts in the gang rape case could not be heard in the top court as the concerned judge was hearing a case related to passive euthanasia in a five-judge bench. Was included in the constitution bench.

Let us tell you that the Gujarat government had ordered 11 criminals to be released ‘prematurely’ while giving exemption from life imprisonment. Bilkis Bano has challenged this decision of the state government in the Supreme Court.

The special CBI Mumbai had sentenced 11 convicts to life imprisonment for the crime of gang rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven members of her family. This sentence was upheld by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.
