Vijayanagar: The Hampi Kannada University Which has earned a special status for research in language, literature, culture and history, is at the center of a fund misappropriation case in which its former vice-chancellor and former registrar accused the government of development works done using nearly Rs 50 crore. Tenders have not been called for Pennies.
The Karnataka Lokayukta, who conducted the inquiry, submitted a report confirming the irregularities. Somnath had alleged that Kannada University had spent Rs 50.86 crore in procuring material from KEONICS and development work through KRIDL during 2014-15 and 2015-16 bypassing the Karnataka Transparency Public in Procurement Act (KTPP), 1999. did.
According to the Lokayukta report, the government had given Rs 77.84 crore to the university between 2015-19. The work was completed without asking for tender and procurement was done for Rs 50.86 crore. The Executive Committee, while accepting the inquiry report, has rejected the replies given by the University authorities.
The matter is now pending before the government to take action against the officials.
“University officials have violated government rules while working and they have misused government grants by dividing the work. The university spent more than 1.5 times the estimated amount for development works. The Lokayukta inquiry report has justified my allegations,” Somnath said. “I am confident that Dr CN Ashwathnarayan, who is the Higher Education Minister, will initiate action against the culprits on the basis of this report,” he said.
