Congress President Sonia Gandhi, while chairing the Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday, emphasized “unity at all levels” and flexibility and discussed the current political situation and the party’s strategy in both the Houses of Parliament.

Congress MPs in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, attended the meeting in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury were also present. This is the first meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) after the party’s defeat in the recent assembly elections in five states.

Sonia Gandhi also said that she has received several suggestions on how to strengthen the Congress and is working on “many of them”.

“I am well aware of how disappointed you are with the recent election results. They have been both shocking and painful,” she said. “Our dedication and determination, our sense of resilience are under severe test. Unity is paramount at all levels of our vast organization and speaking for myself, I am determined to do whatever needs to be ensured.”

Referring to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, soon after the results of the five state elections last month, in which the Congress lost Punjab to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a dismal performance in three states, he said: “CWC is our met once to review the performance. I have also met other colleagues. I have received many suggestions on how to strengthen my organization. Many are relevant and I am working on them.”

Describing the road ahead as “more challenging than ever”, the Congress President said: “Our revival is not only a matter of importance to us – in fact, it is essential to our democracy and indeed to our society as well. . “
