Matthew LeHue is an assistant professor at Dalton State College, according to his Twitter bio.
A professor’s tweet about his students not wearing masks has users on the microblogging site talking. Matthew LeHue, an assistant professor at Dalton State College in Georgia, wrote on Twitter that he begins every class that is due in October by showing his students an ultrasound picture of his son. He does this as an appeal to his students to wear masks in his classroom and protect him and his family from any risk of COVID-19 infection. However, Mr Lehue said only 5 of his 45 students wore masks in class.
“I will never be able to see this work in the same way,” he wrote. The post has garnered over 46.7 likes and 5.7 retweets (and still counting) in less than 24 hours since it was tweeted.
I start every class with an ultrasound photo of my son due in October, requesting my students to wear masks as a personal side of their family. In small, low-capacity classes, only 5 of my 45 students wore masks. I will never be able to see this work in the same way.

Mr Lehue said he was overwhelmed by the responses to his tweet and would be muting it soon. He added in the tweet thread, “I want to be clear that I still care about and value all of my students and want them to succeed. I don’t want them to suffer for their choices; I want to.” I want them to improve. I will always work in this direction.”
It’s hard to keep up with responses so I’m muting the thread soon, but I want to make it clear that I still care about and value all of my students and want them to succeed. I don’t want them to suffer for their choices; I want them to do better. I will always work for it.

The reactions to Mr LeHue’s tweet were moving, to say the least. One of the first reactions was that of former professional American basketball player Rex Chapman.
thank you for sharing. Please be safe.

One user wrote that he did the same experiment to get his students to wear masks. “I did the same thing,” he wrote, “my wife is scheduled for a high risk pregnancy c-section in 8 days… to be honest, I came home from class both days and cried a bit. “
To be clear, I don’t blame the students. I think they are just college kids trying to make their mark and connect. This is clearly an adult/admin/leadership problem who has utterly failed to establish effective rules

Another asked Mr. Lehue to go further. He wrote, “I told my students they could kill me because I had heart surgery… only one is not wearing a mask. Be more direct with them about how their actions affect you and your wife.” can infect.”
I told my students that they could kill me because I had heart surgery. I told them even if they didn’t believe in wearing a mask to do so for the sake of their classmates. Only one is not wearing a mask yet. Be more direct with them about how their actions may affect you and your wife.

However, a rift arose between the community of teachers and students. This user said, “Why ask others to protect yourself when you want security? Protect yourself completely instead of forcing every other person to have your wants and needs.”
Why ask others to protect you when you want protection. Protect yourself completely rather than forcing everyone else to succumb to your wants and needs. Wouldn’t anyone be able to eat peanut butter if you have allergies? You don’t get everything you want in life. (no disrespect)

Some justified the behavior of the students.
I really feel like you should probably enter a new field professionally. Kids are kids, and you know that going in. Withholding education because you don’t like that they’re not wearing a mask because you ask them if that’s a failure on your part as a teacher.

Some criticized the state for being unable to make masks mandatory in the US. This person wrote, “Blame the district for not making masks mandatory. Children should not be given a choice.”
Children should not be given the option of not making masks mandatory in the district.
