India among top countries in terms of installed renewable energy: Modi

New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday highlighted India’s green credentials, saying it is one of the top countries in the world in terms of installed renewable energy. The upcoming UN climate conference, also known as the Conference of the Parties (COP) 26, will highlight the need for equitable distribution of carbon space and support for mitigation and adaptation efforts, he said.

In a statement ahead of his departure to Italy and the UK for the G20 and COP26, Modi said he would also emphasize the need for resilience building measures, finance and technology transfer for “green and inclusive growth”.

“India is setting new records in climate adaptation, mitigation and resilience and in a collective effort to forge multilateral alliances. India is one of the world’s top countries in terms of installed renewable energy, wind and solar power capacity,” Modi said, adding that at the COP26 Leaders’ Summit, he would “share India’s excellent track record on climate action and our achievements.”

The COP26 summit from October 31 to November 12 will provide “an opportunity to meet with all stakeholders, including partner countries, innovators and intergovernmental organization leaders, and explore possibilities of further accelerating our clean development,” he said.

India is one of the largest emitters of Green House Gases (GHGs) which are believed to be responsible for global warming. New Delhi has said that it is on track to meet the commitments made at the 2015 climate summit in Paris, but is facing pressure to update its Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs) and a Name the year when it will achieve net zero emissions i.e. its forests absorb all the carbon emitted by it.

In his statement, Modi also referred to the G20 summit in Rome on October 30-31 in which he would attend.

“I will join other G20 leaders in discussions on global economic and health recovery from the pandemic, sustainable development and climate change. This will be the first individual summit of the G20 in 2020 since the outbreak of the pandemic and will allow us to take stock of the current global situation and exchange views on how the G20 can be an engine for strengthening economic resilience and building back can. inclusively and sustainably from the pandemic,” he said.

“During my visit to Italy, I will also visit Vatican City to meet His Holiness Pope Francis and to meet the Foreign Minister, His Excellency Cardinal Pietro Parolin,” Modi said.

Modi also said that on the sidelines of the G20 summit, he will meet leaders of other allies to review bilateral ties.

According to Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, the leaders Modi will meet include Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Shringla said the G20 will focus on managing the current pandemic, future pandemics that may arise in addition to the overall global health architecture.

The G20 is a major global forum that brings together the world’s major economies. Its members account for more than 80 percent of global GDP, 75 percent of global trade and 60 percent of the planet’s population. The forum has had an annual summit since 2008, with the participation of the respective heads of state and government. The summit will focus on the theme ‘People, Planet, Prosperity, Focus on the areas of recovery from the pandemic and Strengthening Global Health Governance’.
