India continues to see a steady rise in hit and run cases, government issues safety rules

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is monitoring the continuous increase in road accidents in India. In 2020, a total of 52,448 road accidents occurred in the country under the ‘hit and run’ category. MoRTH on its official website shared a complete analysis of how maximum number of such accidents occurred on National Highways. As a step towards spreading road safety awareness, MoRTH shared road safety advice for safe and smooth driving on Twitter.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said there were 57,987 such cases in 2019 and 69,822 in 2018. He said that the government has notified a new scheme as ‘Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents’. Scheme, 2022′, under which it provided for enhancement of compensation for grievous injury from Rs 12,500 to Rs 50,000 in case of a hit-and-run motor accident and from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2,00,000 in case of death. The minister said that the implementation of this scheme is at all India level.

What are the safety measures taken by the Ministry of Road Transport to reduce accidents?

Replying to a separate question, Gadkari said that the road ministry makes provisions for electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety that the state government will ensure that there is appropriate electronic enforcement in high risk and high density corridors on national highways and state highways. Keep the equipment.

According to the Minister, the provision of an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is envisaged in the corridors having high traffic density.
