‘India could be a big market for sustainable fuels’

New Delhi India has all the ingredients to become a major market for sustainable aviation fuel, said Julian Mannhes, head of sustainable fuel projects at Airbus.

Mannhes said the use of SAFs gives countries the unique opportunity to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and the policies and airlines it requires a regulator to implement.

“Sustainable aviation fuel is just beginning to become mass-produced… it currently accounts for less than 1% of total fuel consumption globally,” he said.

Globally, airlines like United, Air France, EasyJet, Qantas, Lufthansa have been quick to adopt SAF; Others are a bit slower but Airbus expects that by 2050, about 70% of global ATF consumption should be SAF-operated.

Fuel efficiency is also a step towards energy conservation, Mannhes said, adding that 63% of the Indian fleet consists of fuel efficient new generation aircraft.

Mannhes said Airbus is working on other small changes to aerodynamics, avionics and aircraft technology to achieve better fuel efficiency.

Airbus is working on a new project on hydrogen and expects the commercial entry of such an aircraft by 2035. It aims to deliver “a nice double-digit” savings when it comes to fuel efficiency compared to the current product. Told.
