India has enough coal reserves: Modi minister rubbishes reports of shortage

The Coal Ministry said that India has enough coal reserves to meet the demands of more than 30 days and there is no need to panic. It further stated that 72.5 million tonnes (mt) of coal stock is lying with Coal India Limited.

“There is enough coal available in the country which is being refilled regularly with record production and will serve us for another month. Presently, 72.5 MT of coal exists from various sources like Coal IndiaHQ, SCCL, Washeries etc with stock and TPP of 22.01 MT,” tweeted Ministry of Coal.

Coal companies are sending about 2.0 million tonnes (MT) of coal per day to the power sector in various ways, such as railwayRoadways and RCR-mode, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a tweet.

In addition to this, 16.7 MT of coal has been offered to power generating companies with an option to lift this quantity through RCR-mode to make adequate stock up, he added.

This comes as reports have surfaced shortage of coal raised concerns about stock in power plants and its impact on power supply.

Electricity demand has increased as the country reopens and moves towards peak summer season, but supply has been disrupted due to reduced availability of railway rakes to transport coal and reduced coal imports.
