India has started a new initiative in the field of renewable energy: Environment Minister

New Delhi: India has launched new initiatives in renewable energy, e-mobility, ethanol blended fuel and green hydrogen as alternative energy sources, said Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav on Tuesday.

Delivering India’s national statement at COP27, the minister said India presented its long-term low-emission growth strategy a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a net zero emissions target by 2070 in Glasgow. “Strategy points to low carbon routes in key economic sectors.”

Yadav said that in response to calls for increased ambition in the 2030 climate goals, India updated its nationally determined contribution in August 2022.

He said the country seeks to foster stronger international cooperation through action and solution-oriented coalitions such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition of Disaster Resilience Infrastructure.

“India is trying hard despite contributing less than 4% of the world’s cumulative emissions and a third of the global average annual per capita emissions. At the heart of India’s vision of a safer planet is the mantra – lifestyle for the environment, which was laid out by PM Modi in the national statement at COP 26,” the minister said.

Mission LiFE was launched on 20 October 2022 by Prime Minister Modi in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Yadav said that the world urgently needs a paradigm shift from mindless and destructive consumption to thoughtful and deliberate consumption. “We are trustees of this planet Earth. We must nurture it through sustainable lifestyles that optimize resource use and minimize waste.”

The Minister said that as the world’s most populous democracy and a vibrant emerging economy, India wants to lead by example. “We invite the global community to be part of LiFE’s mission for individual, family and community-based work.”

Yadav said India is assuming the presidency of the G20 in 2023 with the motto of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’. “Our journey towards a planet that is safe for humanity is one that no nation can undertake alone. It is a collective journey begun with equality and climate justice as our guiding principles.”
