The year 2020, as in 2021 saw the adversity of the ongoing pandemic including lockdown and work-from-home; That is, people stayed at home and spent time with family and close people. Eventually, they ended up ordering food through various food apps, instead of physically going to their favorite eateries. From exotic breakfasts to home-cooked meals and midnight snacks – we ordered this all year round. Keeping all these factors in mind, food-tech giant Swiggy published its sixth annual StatEATstics report, which highlights the most ordered foods and food preferences (by mass) of the year 2021.
According to the report, Biryani was the most ordered food in India in 2021. For the unversed, this is the sixth year in a row that biryani has topped the charts. “In 2020, 90 biryanis per minute and in 2021, India ordered 115 biryanis per minute, or 2 (1.91) biryanis per second,” read the report. Chicken biryani was ordered 4.3 times more than its vegetarian counterpart, especially in cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Hyderabad. In fact, “over 4.25 lakh new users started Swiggy by ordering Chicken Biryani.”
However, dal khichdi was ordered twice in Mumbai as compared to chicken biryani.
On a related note, searches for healthy food on the app doubled in the year 2021 and restaurants with healthy food options saw a 200 percent increase in orders. The report further said, “Bangalore emerged as the most health conscious city, followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai.”
Apart from this, the report also stated that the most loved snack of the year was the samosa, which garnered around 5 million orders throughout the year. The second most ordered snack was Pav Bhaji, with 2.1 million orders in 2021.
