New Delhi: In a major push to the immunization drive on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on Friday, India set a record by delivering over two crore COVID-19 vaccine doses.

According to data from the Co-WIN portal, the cumulative dose administered in the country reached 2,03,68,343 at 5.27 pm.

The total number of doses administered in the country has crossed 78.72 crore.

“A gift to the Prime Minister on behalf of the health workers and the people of the country. Today, on the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has set a new record by crossing the historic figure of giving 2 crore vaccine doses in a day. Well done India!” Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted in Hindi.

In less than a month, daily vaccination has crossed the one crore mark for the fourth time.

Mandaviya said that this is the fastest speed with which 10 million doses have been given.

“On PM @narendramodi ji’s birthday, by 1:30 pm, the country has crossed the 1 crore vaccine mark, the fastest ever, and we are moving forward. I am sure that today we will all set a new immunization record and give it as a gift to the Prime Minister.”

The daily COVID-19 vaccination in the country was over 1 crore on 6 September, 31 August and 27 August.

Mandaviya had on Thursday called for a big push to the COVID-19 vaccination campaign during Prime Minister Modi’s birthday on Friday, saying it would be the perfect gift for him.

The BJP has asked its units across the country to help in getting a large number of people vaccinated on the occasion.

According to the ministry, it took 85 days for India to touch the 10 crore vaccination figure, 45 days to cross the 200 million mark and 29 more days to reach the 30 crore mark.

It said that it took 24 days for the country to reach 40 crore from 300 million doses and then 20 days to cross the 50 crore vaccination mark on 6 August.

The ministry said that it took 19 more days to cross the 60 crore mark and only 13 days to reach 70 crore from 60 crore on 7 September.

The total number of doses administered crossed the 75 crore mark on 13 September.

The nationwide immunization drive was launched on 16 January with the first phase immunization of health workers (HCWs). The vaccination of Frontline Workers (FLWs) began on February 2.

The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination began from March 1 for people above 60 years of age and 45 years and above with specified co-morbid conditions.

The country started vaccination for all people over the age of 45 from 1 April.

The government then decided to expand its vaccination campaign by allowing everyone over the age of 18 to be vaccinated from May 1.
