South African batting great Hashim Amla has suggested that Temba Bavuma should bat higher up the order now as wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock has quit Test cricket. South Africa will face India in the second Test starting here on Monday.
The hosts, trailing 0-1 in the three-match series after losing the first Test by 113 runs, will look to bounce back and save their opponents from their first series loss at home.
Soon after the first Test at Centurion was over, de Kock surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game.
After this, Amla has now given some suggestions to the team.
“Our two best batsmen in the middle are Temba and Quinton (de Kock). Now that Quinton is out of Test cricket, it further cripples the batting line-up, and in fact, now more than ever, it makes it imperative for Temba to bat higher,” Amla added. Cricket South Africa (CSA) was quoted as saying on their official website.
“Whether it is three or four, give him time to play a solid role as opposed to a recovery. In a relatively low-scoring match, I had the pleasure of watching Temba Bavuma. He always looks like he has time and he rarely bothers,” Amala said.
Bavuma scored a half-century in South Africa’s first innings and remained unbeaten on 35 in the second innings. The Proteas were bowled out for 197 and 191 at SuperSport Park and will need better performance with the bat in Johannesburg next week.
